DOHA, Qatar – Saturday, November 28, 2009 – The 2nd leg of the Qatar GP produced one of the most enthralling battles of the season so far as two Italian warlords battled for supremacy with Guido Capellini just securing the honours ahead of Francesco Cantando.
Only a fraction of a second seperated the two drivers for much of the race with Cantando launching into the air on several occasions. Philippe Chiappe had to settle for 3rd place although in the latter stages he challenged Cantando. Qatar’s world champion Jay Price, the Grandpa – dropped out on the first lap but the yellow flags stayed lowered throughout with Al Qamzi, Al Hameli, Selio, Andersson and Lundin rounding out the top 10.
Al Qamzi still leads the table on 112, 3 points clear of Cappellini. - Read more -
A podium-lifeFor the fans of different generations, Guido Cappellini represents together with Bob Spalding and Renato Molinari the real point of reference of this sport.
He won the World Championship UIM F1 9 times. Four successive championships were crowned from 1993 to 1996; a period in which the supremacy of the Team was clear and dominant. Cappellini came back to the highest stage after two seasons in 1999 and in 2001.
The last “pearl” was add in 2002. During this season, Guido conquered the title in Malaysia, three races before the end of the Championship.
Another success was in year 2002. During this season Guido conquered the Title in Malaysia 3 races before the end of the Championship. The last “pearl” was add in 2003. Only 3 points needed to win the Championship and after an intelligent race, in Abu Dhabi Guido won the 8th title of his career, the Pole Position trophy and the Corona Trophy.
The last Title was won in 2005.
2000 “Passed Times”
One thing is certain : Cappellini won six races on twelve but not the Championship that went to the American Scott Gillman who got up two times more on the highest march of the podium.
Guido was disqualified for two races after having protested a little bit too violent after the qualifications for the G.P. of Bulgaria.
“My gesture was very expensive, says Cappellini, and I know I do not have any excuses, but it was psychologically very important for me to show in that race that I was still very fast, taken in consideration that I was a victim of a tragic accident during the last race before.
After a lot of errors in the chronometric system, I reacted consequently because I wanted very hard something to change.
This year, the chronometric system should be improved, but anyway, from that moment on, the mechanics took away all hammers from the tool kits!”
Among the most beautiful moments of the 2000 Season, we remember the magnificent victory on the Como Lake during the “home G.P.”
A life marked by speed
Having a passion for motors from when he was a small boy, Guido started racing with karts when he was 15 years old and he has success in Italy and Europe.
His passion was that high he participated to the F3 motor championship; for his first race, driving a Dallara with a Toyota motor, he obtained the best result for the qualifications and started in pole position. But very quick, his interest were turned towards powerboats.
Starting in the S850 Class and F3, from 1986 he started into F1!
The beginning
In 1986 Cappellini participates to his first World Championship F1 Powerboat with a Molinari-Mercury boat obtaining a 4th place in Hanover and Singapore.
In 1987 he entrusts with Dac Racing. In Miami, he obtains the 3rd place and steps for the first time on a podium in F1 racing. In Bristol, he destroys his boat against the docks, but he saves himself due to a safety cap which will be mandatory.
In 1988, he collects the 3rd places in Augusta, Dublin and Singapore and the 4th in Penang which gave him the fourth place for the final classification.
The first successes
In 1989 he wins his first race with the G.P. of Como, in 1990 he wins in Budapest and he is again on the highest march in 1991 in Penang.
One step from the top
In 1992 he presents himself with an improved boat and, indeed, he gets point after point. In a deciding race, the G.P. of Milan, he obtains pole position and commands the race, but one lap before the end, he is a victim of an accident and has to say goodbye to the title which goes to Fabrizio Bocca.
In November of the same year, he breaks the speed world record for F1 Powerboats exceeding 222 km/h on the lake of Iseo.
